I'm back
It's been busy.
My mom was in town for two weeks. I had graduation. School ended. Summer school started. Offspring's been in SA for two weeks and I went to D last weekend.
My mom's visit was different but good. The first thing she said to me when I picked her up at the airport? "You've plumped up!" Thanks, Mom. Over the course of the two weeks I took advantage of the many opportunities to set her straight about some things. When she made the third comment about my weight, I gently told her it didn;t make me feel good. She protested, "but it looks cute on you." I said no.
When she complained about things at home, I reminded her that she would have to communicate if she wanted to get the things she wanted.
When she made negative comments about Babydaddy, I reminded her that we all grow up with some crappy stuff and we learn to filter what's appropriate and that my Offspring is doing just fine. She proclaimed that she NEVER behaved like that and I gently reminded her thats he did some "bad" stuff, too, and I was still ok. And that people's perception of "bad" varies greatly. Oh, and this conversation followed a drive from SA back to Austin with me, Babydaddy, and her in the car. He was being his typical self and ranting and raving about something stupid. She finally cracked (he's too vulgar for her) and she yelled at him to shut up and she was tired of hearing all his bad language. I told them both that was enough, it got silent, and I said, "let's just listen to music." I, apparently, was the only adult in the car.
She complained constantly about my house, the cat hair, the need for cleaning...which is ironic given the state of her house and overall life.
When she talked too much, I reminded her that I had things to do and that sometimes she talked at length about things that I didn't know anything about which caused a lack of interest for me. I reminded her that her father used to do the same thing to her and she complained about it to me. Haha...she didn't really like that one. But overall, she took all my comments in stride and complied with my requests.
SO, I survived.
