Cultural Sensitivity
I work with some very nice teachers...but some of them are just so damn culturally insensitive. And it's not just the white folks. Today I walked down the hallway and saw a teacher with some of my former students. I comment on how D says she's on green quite a bit (which means a good day). Teacher responds with "Yes, but she's so loud. We just need to work on her volume." Uh, news flash...her mom's loud, her sisiter's loud, and quite frankly, it's culturally acceptable to be loud in some African-American communities. Not only that, but seriously, who cares? She's learning, isn't she?
Later, I walk by a different culturally-insensitive-borderline-racist teacher and she's asking the older brother of an ELL (English Language Learner) student if he's picking one or two kids up. The kid clearly has no idea what the hell she's talking about. She declares loudly, "Hello, English, when are we gonna learn English???" Um, how about in 2-3 years, as research suggests it takes to learn coversational English. And in the meantime, why don't you get a little fucking compassion for a kid who's supposed to be in the "safe" environment of school (that means no belittling, sarcasm, or judgment).
On another note, my AP is nominating me for the Leadership Academy in our district because I expressed interest in pursuing a career in SED Admin. Yikes! Maybe I should think this over some more?! Do I want to cross over to the dark side?
